Are hurricanes getting stronger?
Were recent devastating hurricanes (Katrina & Rita) fueled by greenhouse gases and global warming?
Burning of fossil fuels contributes to warmer oceans.
Sea level in New York City continues to rise; future storms will be far more damaging.
NASA predicts up to a two foot rise in New York sea level by 2050.
Damage to NY infrastructure could be catastrophic.
Fifty-hour storm surge predictions are now available. Stony Brook Storm Surge Research Group proposes that the City build three storm surge barriers.
A major storm could threaten the City's huge underground infrastructure. Billions of dollars need to be spent for storm surge protection over the next decades.
Significant wetlands will be lost over the next 50 years, especially Jamaica Bay. The Stony Brook Storm Surge Research Group promotes construction of three or four storm surge barriers to protect the City.
